October 2006
Having kept up their training throughout the summer and early fall, Chris Hornberger and Ruth Blades have successfully completed another half-marathon walk. Both competed in races on October 15, although this time they were in different provinces.
Chris competed in the Prince Edward Island Half-Marathon in Charlottetown on a course that started in the city and included parts of the Confederation Trail. Her finishing time of 2 hours, 50 minutes is a full 17 minutes faster than her previous best time and the best in her age classification.
Ruth participated in the Toronto International Halif-Marathon which followed Yonge Street, starting in North York, with a swing through Rosedale and finished in Queen's Park.
It was a great route, providing up-close views of much of the city. Despite the cold temperatures, Ruth as able to shave 3 minutes off her personal best time, finishing in 3 hours and 4 minutes. It was a great way to celebrate her sister Carol's birthday (shown here trying to get warm at the finish line).
Both Chris and Ruth look forward to competing in more half-marathon walks in the coming months; their next race is scheduled for February 25 (with hopes of good weather). In the meantime they will continue their training, and participate in shorter fun-walks with their walking club. Watch for them, and cheer them on as they go striding by.
